Gutter Repair & Installation
On Mercer Island
Repairs, new seamless gutters, guards and cleaning for homes under Mercer Island's firs and cedars, with a photo report and a written quote up front.
Most gutter repairs on Mercer Island cost $150 to $600 in 2026. New seamless aluminum gutters run $9 to $16 a linear foot installed, and on most two-story homes that adds up to $2,000 to $3,600. Stainless micro-mesh guards add $4 to $8 a foot to gutters that are still sound, and a professional cleaning is $150 to $400 for most houses. Height, footage and the wood behind the gutter decide where yours lands. We measure first, then put the price in writing.
Half the homes on the island are more than 50 years old. The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 estimates give Mercer Island a median year built of 1973, or 1970 counting only owner-occupied homes. About six in ten went up before 1980, and the 1960s left more of today's housing than any other decade. With seamless aluminum good for 25 to 30 years, a house from the 1960s or 1970s has outlived at least one set of gutters whether or not anyone replaced them, and the fascia behind them has held hangers for half a century.
Atrax Roof and Gutter is an Eastside roofing and gutter company founded in Kirkland in 2018. We hold Washington L&I contractor license ATRAXRG824NU, we're bonded and insured, and on Mercer Island we repair, install, guard and clean gutters. Every new gutter system we put up comes with our 20-year workmanship warranty.
What gutter work costs on Mercer Island in 2026
The four jobs we get called for on the island, side by side. Prices are typical 2026 ranges, installed.
| Job | Typical price (2026) | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Repair visit: reseal a joint, clear an outlet, rehang a run | $150 to $600 | Most island repairs fall in this range |
| One damaged length replaced | $10 to $20 per linear ft | Same profile, joints resealed |
| New 5-inch seamless gutters | $9 to $13 per linear ft | Simple roofs with light tree cover |
| New 6-inch seamless gutters | $11 to $16 per linear ft | Our usual pick under heavy evergreens |
| Downspouts | $4 to $7 per linear ft | The 3x4-inch size pairs with 6-inch gutters |
| Micro-mesh guards added to sound gutters | $4 to $8 per linear ft | Never over gutters that leak or sag |
| New gutters and micro-mesh guards together | $11 to $18 per linear ft | The cheapest moment to add guards |
| Gutter cleaning | $150 to $400 per house | One story $150 to $250; two stories $200 to $375 |
After footage, height moves a Mercer Island price the most. On a house built into a slope, the downhill wall can stand a full story taller than the street side, and the ladder setup grows with it. Multi-level rooflines add corners, outlets and downspouts. And then there's the wood: replacing soft fascia runs $300 to $800 for a typical section, and we'd rather show you a photo of it up front than find it halfway through the job.
A worked example: a two-story house with 200 feet of eave in 6-inch gutter and four 20-foot downspouts comes to $2,200 to $3,200 for the gutter and $320 to $560 for the downspouts, or roughly $2,520 to $3,760 before any fascia work.
Gutter repairs we see most on Mercer Island
These are the repairs we're called out for most on the island, with typical 2026 prices.
| Problem | What you'll see | The fix | Typical cost (2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outlet plugged with needles and cones | One corner spills in every hard rain | Clear the outlet, flush the downspout and reseal it | $150 to $300 |
| Run sagging or pulling away | A gap at the fascia and water standing mid-run | Rehang on hidden hangers and reset the slope toward the outlet | $200 to $450 |
| Leaking seam or corner miter | Drips at a joint, dark streaks on the siding | Reseal the joint or swap in a new corner piece | $150 to $350 |
| Valley spilling in downpours | A sheet of water jumps the gutter at the valley, even right after a cleaning | Add an outlet or a larger 3x4 downspout | $150 to $350 per downspout |
| Downspout loose from its drain | The pipe has pulled out of the buried line, or water pools at its base | Reconnect it, then run a hose down the line to prove it drains | $100 to $300; fixing a broken buried line is a separate quote |
| Length crushed by a falling limb | A dent, split or kink in one section | Cut in a new length to match and seal both ends | $10 to $20 per linear ft |
| Soft or rotted fascia | Spongy wood, paint flaking behind the gutter | New fascia board, then the gutter goes back up | $300 to $800 |

Seamless gutter installation on Mercer Island
New seamless gutters are rolled on-site from a coil and cut to the length of each eave, so the only joints left are at corners and outlets. Fewer joints means fewer places to leak, which is the whole case for seamless on a house that has spent decades dripping at its seams.
Under the island's evergreen cover we usually spec 6-inch K-style gutters with 3x4-inch downspouts. Going from 5 inches to 6 adds roughly 40 percent of carrying capacity, and a 3x4 downspout's opening is double that of the older 2x3 size (12 square inches against 6), so clumps of needles fall through instead of jamming the elbow. The bigger size adds about $2 to $3 a foot. A simple one-story roof with only a tree or two nearby still does fine with 5-inch, as long as the downspouts sit 30 to 40 feet apart. For the roof-area math behind those sizes, see our guide to 5-inch vs 6-inch gutters.
Before new gutters go up, we check the fascia and the roof edge above it. If the drip edge is short or missing, rain finds its way behind the gutter and into the wood, and that is far easier to fix while the old gutters are down. Profiles, colors and hangers are on our seamless gutter replacement page.
Mercer Island gutter protection that handles fir needles
A 2018 canopy study done for the city found trees covering 48 percent of Mercer Island in 2017, up from 40 percent ten years earlier. Most of that canopy, 59 percent, is evergreen, so needles come down all year instead of in one fall rush, and about a quarter of it hangs directly over roofs, driveways and streets. Single-family neighborhoods average 47 percent tree cover and hold three quarters of all the canopy on the island. In other words, the trees are in the yards, right over the gutters.
For needles, stainless micro-mesh is the guard that holds up. Its screen is fine enough that fir needles and cedar sprays sit on the surface until wind or the next rain carries them off. Perforated or coarse screens let needles slip into the trough, and foam or brush inserts end up holding them. Plan on $4 to $8 a foot on gutters that are still sound (a typical 150-foot run comes to $600 to $1,200), or $11 to $18 a foot when new gutters and guards go in together. Guards stretch the time between cleanings. They don't end it, so someone still needs to look at them once a year. Each guard type is compared on our gutter guard installation page.
Gutter cleaning on Mercer Island: when it matters most
If you would rather keep cleaning than add guards, timing matters as much as frequency. At Boeing Field, a few miles west of the island and the closest NOAA station with 30-year normals, September averages 1.37 inches of rain, October 3.49 and November 5.80, the wettest month of the year. November gets about four times September's rain. Every 1,000 square feet of roof sheds about 3,600 gallons in an average November, and a gutter half full of needles in October is the one spilling down the siding by Thanksgiving.
Most homes here need a cleaning in late spring and another in late fall, and under heavy evergreens a third or fourth visit is common. A one-story house typically runs $150 to $250, a two-story $200 to $375, and a large or three-story home $350 to $500 or more. Flushing a plugged downspout adds about $50 to $100. If we spot a repair while we're up there, we'll show you a photo and price it separately. Our gutter cleaning cost guide explains what moves the price, and our seasonal timing guide helps you pick the dates.
Downspouts on a sloped island lot
On Mercer Island, the gutter is only half the job. The other half is where the water goes next. The same 2018 study put the city's designated potential slide areas at 2,046 acres, about half of the island's land, with more than 80 percent of that area in single-family neighborhoods. Slopes of 40 percent or steeper make up 14 percent of the land.
Washington's stormwater manual, published by the Department of Ecology, gives a useful yardstick. A plain splash block is meant for a downspout with at least 50 feet of lawn or planting in front of it before a property line, a building or a slope steeper than 15 percent. Runoff headed toward a landslide hazard area should be evaluated by a geotechnical engineer or licensed geologist, and a splash block shouldn't empty on or above a slope steeper than 15 percent without that review and the city's sign-off. When a lot can't meet those distances, the water has to be piped somewhere else, and on a slope that's a call for an engineer.
Our part is simpler. Any downspout that disappears into the ground gets a hose run down it, so you know whether the line drains. A broken or root-packed line, or a downspout emptying onto a slope, goes on the estimate with photos. If the fix would move water toward a slope, we'll say so and send you to a geotechnical engineer first.
How a Mercer Island gutter job runs
- A close look, with photos. We check every run, the fascia and drip edge behind it, each outlet and where every downspout drains, and send you photos of what we find.
- A price in writing. Repairs get a fixed price. New gutters get one itemized number: size, downspouts, guards if you want them and any wood that has to be replaced.
- Work planned around the lot. Ladder setup on a slope or a tall downhill wall is planned before the crew shows up. New runs are rolled on-site and hung on hidden hangers with a steady fall to each outlet. Most repairs take one visit and most new systems one day.
- Proof that it drains. Water goes through every run and down every downspout before we leave, and the old metal and debris leave with us.
Gutter service across Mercer Island
We work all over the island, from the North End and East Seattle to First Hill, Mercerdale, Island Crest and the South End. Tree cover isn't even across those neighborhoods. The 2018 study found the most heavily treed drainage basins in the middle of the island, lighter cover toward the north and south ends, and the least in the northwest corner. Across the island's census block groups, canopy ran from 30 percent to more than twice that.

Mercer Island gutter questions
How much does gutter repair cost on Mercer Island?
Most gutter repairs on Mercer Island run between $150 and $600. Resealing seams or reattaching a downspout is the low end of that range, while re-pitching a run, replacing a damaged section, or repairing the fascia behind the gutter costs more. Section replacement in seamless aluminum runs about $10 to $20 per linear foot.
How much does gutter installation cost on Mercer Island?
Installed, new seamless aluminum gutters run $9 to $16 a linear foot in 2026: $9 to $13 for 5-inch and $11 to $16 for 6-inch. On most two-story island homes that comes to $2,000 to $3,600 for the gutters. Downspouts add $4 to $7 a foot, and replacing soft fascia adds $300 to $800.
How do I know if my gutters need repair or replacement?
Repair usually makes sense when the problem is localized, such as one sagging run or a few leaking seams, and the rest of the metal is in good shape, typically on gutters under 15 to 20 years old. Replacement is smarter when there is widespread sagging, rust across multiple runs, or seams failing in several places, or when you are already re-roofing or repainting the trim.
Are gutter guards worth it on Mercer Island?
Under heavy evergreen cover, usually yes. Stainless micro-mesh keeps fir needles and cedar sprays out of the trough. It runs $4 to $8 a foot when the gutters underneath are in good shape and $11 to $18 a foot when new gutters go in at the same time. When a house needs two or more paid cleanings a year, good guards usually earn back their cost within three to five years. They still need a light check once a year.
How often should Mercer Island homes have their gutters cleaned or inspected?
At least twice a year, in late spring and late fall. Mercer Island homes under heavy fir, cedar, or maple canopy often need three or four cleanings every year, because needles and debris clog the gutters and add weight that pulls fasteners loose.
Can you repair just one section of gutter?
Yes. If most of the system is sound, we replace only the damaged length in matching seamless aluminum and reseal the joints, rather than replacing the whole system.
Do you fix the fascia board behind the gutter?
Yes. Rotted or soft fascia is a common reason gutters sag or pull away on older Mercer Island homes. We repair the fascia first, then rehang the gutter so it holds pitch and drains properly.
